Was je maar hier

De genomineerden voor de vertaalwedstrijd ‘Nederland vertaalt‘ zijn eindelijk bekend. Hier de vertaling die ik heb ingezonden.

The nominees for the translating contest ‘Nederland vertaalt‘ are finally published. Here’s the translation that I submitted.

Was je maar hier – Pink Floyd

Dus, dus je ziet het verschil
Hemel of hel,
Blauwe lucht of pijn.
Is ‘t een onbeschreven blad
Of een stalen stang?
Een lach of een gil?
Dus je ziet het verschil?

Dus ze lieten je ruilen
Je helden voor spoken?
Hete kolen voor bomen?
Kouwe drukte voor frisse wind?
Schrale troost voor een fooi?
En werd je in plaats van
Een figurant aan het front
Dan een filmster in een kooi

O, was je maar, o, was je maar hier
We zwemmen doelloos rond
In een glazen kom,
Jaar in jaar uit,
Ouwehoeren we voor ons uit:
Wist ik allang.
We zijn nog steeds bang.
Was jij maar hier.

Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

(Waters, Gilmour 1975)
